Mixed Method Study

Signs of future mental health problems can emerge before the age of five. However, the lack of prognostic tools that evaluate behavioral and contextual risk for early childhood mental health problems makes it difficult to identify children who may need support. In collaboration with Northwestern University and Washington University in St. Louis, we have developed an early childhood mental health risk calculator (DECIDE Tool) to systematically identify young children at risk for mental health difficulties. While existing efforts have primarily focused on implementation in pediatric primary care, some of our current work is aimed at applying the DECIDE Tool to preschool settings. As part of this process, for this study, we are collecting caregiver and teacher perspectives via surveys and interviews to better understand attitudes and behaviors surrounding early childhood mental health and risk screening to guide future implementation
